Quick answer: QC photos are pictures of your actual item taken at your agent’s China warehouse before it ships abroad. They are your one cheap chance to catch problems. Check them against the listing for colour, stitching, logos, hardware, measurements and completeness — and if something is wrong, sort it out while the item is still in China, because returns get impractical the moment it ships. Below: the 8-point checklist, how to get extra or natural-light photos, and exactly what to do when an item fails.
Why QC Photos Are the Most Underrated Part of Agent Shopping
When you buy through a Taobao agent, your order makes a stop you never get shopping direct: the agent’s warehouse. Someone there photographs the real product the seller actually sent — not the studio shots on the listing. Everything after that point is expensive to undo (international shipping, customs, weeks in transit). Everything before it is cheap to fix, because a return inside China is a domestic return.
Most buyers glance at the photos for five seconds and hit approve. This guide is about spending two minutes instead.
The 8-Point QC Checklist
- 1. Match against the listing. Open the product page side by side. Same model, same variant, same colourway you ordered? Wrong-variant shipments are one of the most common seller mistakes.
- 2. Colour — with a caveat. Warehouse lighting is bright and cool, so colours shift (reds and blues especially). Compare against buyer-review photos on the listing, and if colour is critical, ask for a natural-light shot (see below).
- 3. Stitching and seams. Zoom into hems, collars, straps and stress points. Loose threads are cosmetic; crooked or skipped seams are structural.
- 4. Logos, prints and patterns. Check alignment, spacing and print sharpness. Blurry or off-centre printing does not improve in transit.
- 5. Hardware. Zippers, buckles, clasps, buttons — do they sit straight and seated? Request a close-up if a zipper matters to you.
- 6. Measurements. For clothing, ask for garment measurements laid flat and compare with the seller’s size chart. Chinese sizing runs small, and size-chart drift is a leading cause of returns.
- 7. Stains, marks and damage. Scan edges, corners and light-coloured fabric. Factory dust wipes off; pressed-in marks and scuffs do not.
- 8. Completeness. Accessories, laces, belts, dust bags, manuals — if the listing shows it, it should be in the photo set.
How to Get More Than the Standard Photos
The free photo set is a general once-over, shot at speed. When something specific matters — a sole, a logo, a measurement, true colour — you can direct the warehouse instead of guessing. On Fishgoo it works like this:
- Log in and open the Warehouse section, where items that have arrived are listed with their QC photos.
- Find the item and click the green add-on service button to order a Detailed Photo.
- Write your exact requirement in the remarks box. This is the step people skip and then wonder why the photo didn’t answer their question. Be specific: “both shoes from the front, in natural light”, “close-up of the zipper pull”, “chest measurement laid flat”.
- Note that each Detailed Photo order covers one photo. Need three angles? Place three orders.
Detailed Photos are a paid add-on (2 CNY each at the time of writing — check current pricing in your account). Requesting a retake because a standard QC photo came out unclear is different: send your PI order number (for example PI2505210000044) and say which shot is unclear, and the warehouse will reshoot it.
The timing trap nobody warns you about
Photo requests only work while your items are sitting in the warehouse as loose items. Once you submit a shipping or parcel request, your goods may already be packed — and a packed parcel is not reopened for photos. Do all your inspecting and photo requests before you submit the parcel. If items haven’t reached the warehouse yet, there is nothing to photograph either.
Category-Specific Checks
Clothing
Measurements beat size labels. Ask for pit-to-pit and length laid flat and compare against a garment you already own that fits.
Shoes
Look at the glue line where the upper meets the sole, heel alignment from behind, and ask for a sole shot — moulding defects show there first.
Bags
Hardware close-ups, strap stitching, lining, and the shape when the bag stands unsupported. Structured bags that arrive creased may not recover.
Electronics and gadgets
Ask for a power-on photo where possible, and check ports, included cables and plug type — Chinese-market plugs often need an adapter.
When Something’s Wrong: Your Three Options
Whatever you do, don’t submit the item for shipping yet. While it is still in the warehouse (see the full buying workflow for where this step sits), you have three routes:
- Accept it. If the flaw is minor and you can live with it, carry on and submit the parcel as normal.
- Apply for a refund. In My Orders, find the item and open the refund request, pick the reason (wrong colour, defective, not as described), and upload the QC photo with the problem marked.
- Request an exchange. Same refund flow, but state what you want in the remarks — for example “please exchange for size L in black” — and attach the evidence.
Set your expectations honestly: your agent negotiates with the seller on your behalf, but not every Taobao seller accepts returns or exchanges, and outcomes are not guaranteed. If a seller refuses an exchange, the usual fallback is a refund and a fresh order elsewhere. Three things improve your odds: request it quickly while the item is still in the warehouse, leave tags attached (items with tags removed generally can’t be returned), and include your PI order number with a clear description of the problem. Some categories — customised items, underwear and intimate apparel — are non-returnable regardless.
Checking Quality Before You Even Order
Two habits that save whole return cycles. First, read listing reviews with buyer-uploaded photos — scroll past the studio images to what real shipments actually look like. Second, community tools aggregate QC photos shared by other buyers and are searchable by product link, so you can often see an item’s real-world quality before spending anything. Combine both with seller ratings and most bad listings filter themselves out.
How It Works on Fishgoo
Every item arriving at the warehouse gets 5 free QC photos, visible in your Warehouse dashboard, and nothing ships until you decide. Need a specific angle, a close-up or natural light? Order a Detailed Photo with your requirement in the remarks. Unclear standard photo? Ask for a retake with your PI number. And because Fishgoo gives you 100 days of free storage, there’s no pressure to rush the decision — inspect each item properly, resolve any problems while they’re cheap to fix, then consolidate everything into one shipment.
FAQ
What are QC photos?
QC (quality control) photos are pictures your shopping agent takes of your actual item when it arrives at their China warehouse — before international shipping. They are your chance to inspect what the seller really sent while the item is still in China, where returns and exchanges are far easier than after it ships.
How many QC photos do you get?
It varies by agent. Fishgoo provides 5 free QC photos per item when it arrives at the warehouse, with extra angles available as a paid add-on. Always check what’s included before ordering — inspection is where agents differ most.
Can I ask for a photo in natural light?
Yes, on Fishgoo. Warehouse lighting shifts colours, so if colour accuracy matters, request a Detailed Photo and write your requirement in the remarks box — for example, “photo of both shoes from the front, in natural light”. Each Detailed Photo order covers one photo, so request several separately if you need multiple angles.
What if the QC photos are blurry?
Ask for a retake. On Fishgoo, send your PI order number (e.g. PI2505210000044) and say which photo is unclear — retaking unclear standard photos is not a paid add-on.
What should I do if my item fails QC?
Don’t submit it for shipping yet. You have three options: accept it, apply for a refund, or request an exchange — all handled while the item is still in the China warehouse. Note that the agent negotiates with the seller on your behalf, and not every seller accepts returns, so outcomes aren’t guaranteed.
When is it too late to request photos?
Once you submit a shipping or parcel request, your items may already be packed and cannot be reopened for photos. Do all your QC inspection and photo requests before submitting the parcel.
